adjustable beds for storage beds

Adjustable Bed for Storage Beds

What makes adjustable beds for storage beds work is a feature called zero clearance or platform style.  Storage beds typically have drawers built into the frame of the bed.  This makes it necessary for anything put atop the storage bed to remain flat or rise above the frame.  Most traditional adjustable beds will fold in a manner that dips below level at some point in the adjustability process.  When an adjustable bed is made to fit the needs of a storage bed frame, it won’t do that.

Can you use an adjustable base with a storage bed?

Yes, an adjustable bed can be used with a storage bed frame.  However, there are some prerequisites that must be met first.  The storage bed itself must have a solid center support in place.  This center support should be able to adequately brace the weight of an adjustable bed.  The storage bed will also need to provide a flat surface for which to set a platform adjustable bed on.  The adjustable beds for storage beds usage, are called platform bases.  They allow for that zero clearance previously mentioned.  This aspect is a vital part of what makes the base work with this type of bed.

Different Types of Storage Beds

Not all storage beds look or perform their secondary function of storing similarly.  Some beds work with a drawer system that includes two drawers, others with four.  Some storage beds work more like a trunk, by lifting and allow for storage beneath the mattress inside the frame.  Here are the two main types of storage bed and how they implement storage and sleep.  Each of these options can utilize an adjustable beds for storage beds.  That’s because they all meet the two requirements; solid center support and flat surface.

Storage Beds with Drawers:

In a drawer system storage bed, you may see one long drawer at the foot of the bed.  You may see two drawers on each side of the bed for a total of four drawers.  You may even see one on each side for two total.  The number or location of the drawers on a storage bed don’t impact whether it can be used with an adjustable bed.  Adjustable beds for storage beds only need the strong center support and flat horizontal surface area.

Ottoman Storage Beds:

Not every ottoman storage bed will work as an adjustable bed.  There are two types of ottoman storage beds; half-ottoman or full-ottoman.  A half ottoman will fold midway through the top of the frame.  This allows a person to lift and open a hidden storage area within the bed frame.  The issue with a half-ottoman is that the flat surface is compromised where it bends.  It cannot provide that solid center needed by a platform adjustable bed.  When choosing an ottoman type storage bed for use with an adjustable bed, choose the full ottoman.  Platform adjustable beds for storage beds weigh between 130-150 pounds.  Therefore, it is essential they have a straight, flat, supportive surface that can withstand the weight.  With an ottoman storage we recommend using a Glideaway Freestyle adjustable bed or something similar.  This bed can be bolted down so when lifting the bed to access storage, the bed will not move.

Zero Clearance and Platform Adjustable Beds – An Option:

Having an adjustable bed that is made to be compatible with a platform bed is best.  There are other options out there though.  Regular adjustable beds that boast zero clearance can have legs removed so the bed can sit flat on the platform of the storage bed.  The reason we like platform adjustable beds more for this particular use, is they look better.  They tend to have a lower profile, making them around three inches thick versus the 6” or higher frame of a regular adjustable bed.  This translates to a sleeker, more appropriate look for a storage bed that doesn’t end up being too high.  They are also generally available at a lower cost.

These platform adjustable beds are suitable for pairing with a storage bed.  When used with a storage bed that meets specifications, they transform a bed into a better overall sleep experience.  Some offer extra features like massage, but all deliver adjustable positioning.
