Bed Sheet Sizes and DimensionsSheet Sizes

What are the standard sizes of sheets?

The sizes of sheets depend on the mattress. Thus, the usual mattress sizes, like the Twin and Full, have corresponding sheet sizes. Since there are custom mattress sizes, there can also be custom sheet sizes. The chart below describes all the sheet sizes in inches and cm. Take note that the sizes are based on a mattress that is 12 inches tall. If the mattress is taller than 12 inches, double the width. As for the length, add the difference between the mattress’s thickness and 12 to the length. Take for example a mattress that is 14 inches tall. Double the width. This extra distance allows for overhang on the width. As for the length, since the thickness is 14 inches, its differences from 12 inches is 2. Thus, the length of the sheet you need is the length of the mattress plus 2 more inches. If your mattress thickness is less than 12 inches, you still get the difference between it and 12 inches. But, you subtract the difference from the sheet length instead of adding it.

Considerations

After you decide what mattress you will get, a next step is to consider the sheets. Remember that a fitted sheet has an elastic edge that fits over your mattress. Thus, it is usually the same size as the mattress. It is also called a bottom sheet. As the name suggests, a flat sheet goes over the mattress and lies completely flat on the surface. The flat sheet makes the bed appear more inviting. It also keeps duvet covers and blankets from getting dirty. The flat sheet is also called a top sheet. Because it goes over and covers the bed, the flat sheet usually has larger dimensions. Choosing the correct sheets helps complete the ambience of a bed.
