History

Founded in 1883, J.P Leggett and C.B. Platt formed a partnership for combining their talent and production resources. In 1901, the two partners established Leggett and Platt Spring Bed & Manufacturing Company, the name we know and recognize today. During the Great Depression, the company began to manufacture springs for innerspring mattresses. Boding well with consumers, by 1960, Harry M. Cornell, Jr., the new president of the company, began expansion efforts to increase the clientele. As part of his efforts, they partnered with Armco Steel Corp. to construct a wire mill in their Carthage factory. During the 80s and 90s, they obtained the Gordon Manufacturing Co. and the Hanes Holding Company and VWR Textiles & Supplies Inc.
Following other acquisitions during the mid-90s, the company’s net earnings were reported to $290.5 million by 1999. Today, they are known for the production of adjustable bed frames, mattresses, and other compatible products. It’s worth noting the company is officially credited with launching the U.S. bedspring industry. They started out as one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of bedding and furnishing products.
