Organic Latex Hybrid Mattresses

iAdjust 14” Organic Latex Hybrid Mattress

organic latex mattress 14 inch hybrid soft

Comfort Level: Soft

There are two main components in an iAdjust 14” Organic Hybrid Mattress.  The bottom layer consists of coils, while the upper layer is made up of certified organic latex.  This sets it apart from many organic latex mattresses as it includes edge support encasing the coil layer.  Most memory foam and latex mattresses don’t have reinforced edge support.  The latex measures 14ILD, which means it’s very soft.  Around the mattress is a Global Organic Textile Standard certified organic cotton cover.

  • Lower layer of Six-inch Pocketed Coils made from 12-gauge steel.
  • Coil count of 625 for Queen size and 812 for King size.
  • Three inches of GOLS certified organic latex with 14ILD.
  • Topped with additional 4” of 14 ILD GOLS certified organic latex.
  • Wrapped in cover made of 1” of GOTS Certified Organic Cotton.
  • Edge support: 3” of 100 density latex.
  • Includes a 20-year limited warranty.

iAdjust 14” Organic Latex Hybrid Mattress

organic latex mattress 14 inch hybrid medium

Comfort Level: Medium

The firm iAdjust 14” Organic Latex Hybrid Mattress is similar to the Soft, with one difference.  The certified organic latex in these two mattresses have differing ILD ratings.  The Impression Load Deflection number is used to differentiate the firmness of the latex itself. On the firm comfort level mattress, there are two layers of latex; one is 3” at a 19ILD, the other is 4” at 28 ILD.  Whereas, the softer firmness has two layers, both with a 14 ILD rating.  All the other parts of these mattresses match.  Both have the pocketed coil layer and both offer the additional edge support.  This is a good mattress choice for someone who prefers a medium to firm sleep surface.

  • Three-inch 19ILD rated GOLS Certified Organic Latex layer.
  • Atop a second GOLS Certified Organic Latex Layer 4” thick at 28ILD.
  • 12-gauge steel constructed 6” pocketed coils.
  • A three-inch 100 density latex edge support.
  • All encased by 1” GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Cover.
  • Queen size has 625 coils while king size uses 812.
  • Comes with a 20-year limited manufacturer warranty.

iAdjust 12” Organic Latex Hybrid Mattress

organic latex mattress 12 inch hybrid soft

Comfort Level: Soft

The build of an iAdjust 12” Organic Latex Hybrid Mattress is the same as the 14” options.  However, the width of the latex is different.  Instead of a three-inch and four-inch layer, this mattress comes with three-inch and two-inch layers.  That gives it a shorter profile and also makes it a little firmer than the thicker mattress.  It maintains the coil and edge support systems of the 14” models and has the same organic cotton cover.  The latex in a plush 12” has the same soft ILD ratings as the latex in the soft 14”.  Combination sleepers often find this to be a good fit.

  • Six inch 12-gauge pocket coil system.
  • Two-inch layer of 14 ILD GOLS Certified Organic Latex.
  • Second 14 ILD rated GOLS Certified Organic Latex layer three inches thick.
  • 1” Organic Cotton Cover GOTS Certified.
  • 3” Edge Support (100 density latex).
  • 812 coils per king and 625 per queen.

Includes manufacturer’s limited warranty 20 years.

iAdjust 12” Organic Latex Hybrid Mattress

organic latex mattress 12 inch hybrid medium mattress

Comfort Level: Medium

Inside the firm iAdjust 12” Organic Latex Hybrid, the structure is the same.  Two layers of organic latex atop a coil system with edge support.  The difference between the soft 12” and the firm is in the ILD ratings for each layer.  Rather than have a full five inches of 14ILD rated latex, the firm has two individual layers with differing ILDs.  The upper layer is three inches of 28ILD, a firmer latex.  The second layer is just two inches of the softer 14ILD certified organic latex.  This mattress will be slightly firmer than the 14” firm model and is optimal for a stomach sleeper.

  • 1” GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Cover.
  • 3” GOLS Certified Organic Latex (28ILD).
  • 2” GOLS Certified Organic Latex (14ILD).
  • Six-inch layer of 12-gauge pocketed coils.
  • 100 density latex edge support – 3”.
  • 625 count coils for Queen/812 count coils for King.
  • 20-year limited warranty.

Certifications That Don’t Mean It’s an Organic Latex Mattress

Be cautious when retailers bombard you with labels and certifications on their so-called organic latex mattress.  They may hope you don’t realize the mattress isn’t really organic.  Some attempt to overwhelm you with information that is not relevant to the organic status of the mattress.  The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 label does not mean a mattress is organic.  It does mean the product has been tested for 100 chemicals.  Likewise, a GreenGuard Certification or Eco-Institut does not make it an organic latex mattress.  It simply means the product has met certain emissions requirements.

Examples of labeling that do not mean a mattress is organic:

  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100
  • Greenguard
  • Eco Institut

What to Look for With GOTS Labels on Your Organic Latex Mattress

As we mentioned before, GOTS is one label to look for in order to identify an organic latex mattress. It is the Global Organic Textile Standard, meaning it’s a world-wide accepted processing standard for organic textiles and fabric. To earn a GOTS certification, the textile must be made up of the minimum 70% organic fibers. In addition, the textile must also pass certain social and ecological criteria. Now, it is possible for a mattress to contain the minimum 70% organic composition and achieve this label. So be careful to note which level of certification your organic latex mattress has earned. The iAdjust mattress we carry is 100% organic and as such has met the requirements for the highest GOTS certification. The iAdjust organic latex mattress is the real deal.

What to Look for With GOLS Labels on Your Organic Latex Mattress

Every organic latex mattress will have met the Global Organic Latex Standard as well.  This certification has two levels just as the GOTS does. Either the organic latex mattress is “made with X% of organic” or it “contains x% of organic.”  To use these marks, the mattress must either meet the 70% minimum or 95% minimum, depending on which standard it has passed.  GOLS requires the milky-white latex to have been grown organically, without the use of chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides.  It also requires the trees to be grown using at least one sustainable energy source.  It is possible for a mattress to carry a GOLS label and yet not be wholly organic.  We are proud to offer iAdjust organic latex mattresses because they are 100% organic latex.  This provides peace of mind and a high quality mattress.

Purpose of  Wool on an Organic Latex Mattress?

An organic latex mattress cannot be made with the use of any chemicals.  According to the law, a mattress must have a fire barrier.  Many products use chemicals to produce this barrier.  However, an absolutely organic latex mattress won’t.  That’s why you’ll see a wool layer in organic latex mattress descriptions.  Wool is a naturally fire resistant material.  There are many types of wool.  This layer can be made with Merino wool, Lambs wool, Shetland wool, Cashmere, Alpaca, or Mohair.

What is an Organic Latex Mattress Cover Made Out Of?

Covers vary on organic latex mattresses but in many cases they will be composed of organic cotton.  The GOTS label on an organic cotton cover will say “Certified Covers-100@Organic Cotton.”  Sometimes products will contain this label indicating the cover is organic and make it appear the entire mattress is.  Don’t be fooled.  A true organic latex mattress will have both the GOTS and GOLS certifications.

Does “Green” Translate to Organic?

Sometimes companies will use the word “green” when describing an organic latex mattress.  It does not universally mean organic.  A company could use the word to describe a company philosophy or mission.  A company could use the word green to indicate one aspect of their production process.  For example, they may produce a green cover for a mattress that is not organic within that cover.  When a mattress has both GOTS and GOLS certifications it has gone through an extensive and expensive process.  The certification pair verifies the content of the mattress as well as the process it underwent during production.

Companies may use “green” to describe a Non-Organic Mattress:

  • GOTS cover but the latex inside is natural
  • GOTS cover with latex and steel coils
  • GOTS cover but synthetic blend of latex inside

Talalay Latex is NOT organic

If a mattress is made with Talalay latex, it is not an organic latex mattress.  There are many websites that claim Talalay is better for the top layer, but those are just claims.  Natural Latex Mattresses is cheaper to produce as it is made without the oversight that organic requires.  Pesticides can be used to keep bugs out.  Less man power is required because there’s not monitoring or controlling of the environment as required by organic latex.  In turn, Talalay costs less to produce.

Hightlights:

  • Talalay is not organic
  • Dunlop is the only true organic process

Where Does Organic Latex Grow?

An organic latex mattress is made from natural rubber and just about ninety percent of natural rubber comes from Asia.  Latex is harvested by peeling bark from the Heveabrasilienis Tree and collecting the sap beneath.  After maturing between five and seven years old, the rubber tree is “tapped” for as many as thirty years.  Each iAdjust organic latex mattress is made from these trees grown in Sri Lanka.

Why Does Organic Latex Mattress Have Holes?

Most organic latex mattresses have air holes.  These holes are often referred to as pincore.  The purpose behind the holes is to allow airflow.  They help to release heat from the mattress, keeping your skin cool and dry as you sleep.  Polyurethane foams generally trap heat more than a latex mattress would so pincore is not a necessary aspect.  If an organic latex mattress doesn’t have the holes, it just means it will sleep hotter than if it had them.

Bonus Feature from iAdjust Organic Latex Mattress

Not only do you get a real organic latex mattress when you choose iAdjust, you also get adjustable firmness.  This means you can set the mattresses firmness to the level you like best.  Simply unzip the cover and rearrange the three inner layers.  The iAdjust organic latex mattress comes with three layers inside. Each layer has a differing ILD rating.  The ILD indicates the firmness level.  One layer is soft, another is medium and the third is firmest.  As your firmness needs change, you can adjust again and always maximize your comfort.

Conclusion

At Rest Right Mattress we are proud to feature a real organic latex mattress on our website.  After careful consideration, we opted to carry the iAdjust organic latex mattress.  We took into consideration that the cover is organic cotton with wool fire barrier.  We feel good about offering this mattress composed of Dunlop organic latex.  Another aspect we like is the fact that each of the inner layers is individually wrapped in cotton covers to protect them as the firmness is adjusted.  The iAdjust has the highest certification for both GOTS and GOLS, with 100% organic composition.  We chose to carry this mattress because it is a real organic latex mattress and that’s what we were looking for.  To reduce the research you have to do, we did it for you.  We chose the iAdjust and we believe you’ll be happy if you do too.
