TRENDELENBURG BED BUYER`S GUIDE

trendelenburg bed

What is a Trendelenburg Bed?

A Trendelenburg bed is one that remains flat as it inclines the foot end of the bed above the head end.  In modern days, some of these beds have other capabilities as well.  Notably, they can also move into the reverse Trendelenburg position which inclines the head rather than the feet yet maintains a flat surface.  Trendelenburg beds today may differ in the degree of inclination from one model to another.  Originally the Trendelenburg position was used for surgery.  The idea was to leverage gravity to move organs out of the way during surgery performed on the abdomen.  It was named after Dr. Friedrich Trendelenburg who first successfully utilized this position in surgery.

trendelenburg vs reverse trendelenburg positionTrendelenburg vs Reverse Trendelenburg

Reverse Trendelenburg is a position that is opposite to the traditional Trendelenburg position.  Instead of the upper portion of the bed being low, the foot of the bed is.  Otherwise, this position mirrors the Trendelenburg and is similarly operated.  With the body lying flat on the back, the part that supports the legs lowers.  This keeps the body straight while putting it at an angle that lifts the head above the body.  It is very similar to the Elevation feature offered on Symphony Sleep beds but it is found on hospital beds.

Trendelenburg Bed Positions

 “Trendelenburg Position”

The Trendelenburg position is achieved with the body flat, laying face upward with feet elevated.  This position on the Supernal 5 and Valiant is set with a 10-degree incline.

“Reverse Trendelenburg Position

When in the reverse Trendelenburg position, the Valiant and the Supernal 5 also have a 10-degree incline.

 “Head and Foot

Both the Supernal 5 and the Valiant beds have head and foot positioning outside of the Trendelenburg position.  The head adjusts up to 60 degrees and the feet up to 35 degrees on either bed.

“High-Low Position”

The High-Low feature is included on the Valiant and Supernal 5 beds.  This is what allows the entire bed to lift and lower, similar to a hospital bed.  It’s good for bedside access as well as transferring into the bed.  From deck to floor these beds have a height range of 12-24 inches.

Available Sizes

The Supernal 5:

Sizes on these Trendelenburg beds seem to not really follow typical standard bed size rules.  The first size on a Supernal 5 is listed on our site as a Twin XL.  It measures the same as a traditional Twin XL at 38”x80”.  Sometimes it will be called a Twin on this model, but the dimensions remain the same regardless.  Other sizes include the Full, Queen and Dual King.

Valiant:

Valiant also comes in a Twin but we call it a Twin XL.  That’s because it is actually 38”x80” which is the same size as a standard Twin XL.  Other sizes include a modified Twin that’s 38”x84”, Full 53”x80”, Full 53”x84”, Queen 60”x80” and a special size measuring 48”x80”.
