Adjustable Bed Mattress

What type of mattress will work with adjustable bed?

When searching for an adjustable bed mattress, it is important to choose the right type.  Some types of mattress will not work with an adjustable bed.  Some will work, but not well.  There are also some things to consider outside of mattress type as you narrow down the options.  For example mattress thickness will affect ease of use and comfort as well.  The four types of mattress that may work as an adjustable bed mattress include latex, memory foam, hybrid and air.

Memory Foam Mattress

Memory foam can be a good option for an adjustable bed mattress.  Just as the foam conforms to your body, it will conform to the bed.  Memory foam moves and adjusts as the bed changes position.  You remain supported and comfortable in each position and even as you change position.

Latex Mattress

Flexibility is a key advantage that a latex adjustable bed mattress offers.  The flexible layers of a latex mattress have a different feel than memory foam.  At the same time it maintains the ability to adapt as the bed’s positioning is used.  Latex mattresses are made from tree sap and are formed to be durable and long lasting.

Hybrid Mattress

Independent coils within a hybrid adjustable bed mattress allow the mattress to fold without tangling coils up.  There are several reasons to choose a hybrid mattress.  This type of mattress combines the best of two or more types of mattress to make one multi-benefit mattress.  They can also provide the opportunity for adjustable firmness. If you go with a hybrid, just be sure it has these independent coils.

Airbed Mattress

Though an airbed can be used as an adjustable bed mattress, it is not ideal.  The way an airbed is designed inhibits the support at the angle and in the bottom layer when used with an adjustable bed.

What mattress is not the best for adjustable bed?

Some mattresses will simply not work as an adjustable bed mattress.  Coil mattresses that don’t utilize an independent coil system are not recommended for use in an adjustable bed.  Coils without this system can become entangled at the fold when moving through motions.  This can damage the mattress and cause pain for the user.  That being said, most newer mattresses use independent coils.

Things to consider when looking for a mattress for an adjustable bed?

There are a few major things that you should think about prior to making your adjustable bed mattress selection.  Eliminate mattresses that have coils if the coils aren’t independent.  The mattress you select will also need to be sufficiently flexible as it will move through the motions with you.  Another aspect you may have overlooked is the height of the mattress.  The thickness of the mattress will impact how high it sits up.  Too high and it can be difficult to get in and out of bed.  Too low may feel awkward.  Shorter individuals tend to select a 10 inch to 12 inch thick mattress while taller people usually prefer one that is twelve to fourteen inches.

So what adjustable bed mattress is the best?

Mattresses comprised of latex or memory foam tend to be the top selected adjustable bed mattresses.  Both offer the pliability necessary to move through the multiple positions of an adjustable bed.  These types also both provide a comfortable sleeping surface and the support necessary for a good night’s sleep.

What is the least favorite?

Of the mattresses that could be used as an adjustable bed mattress, airbeds are preferred the least.  They just don’t offer up consistent support at the bend.  Insufficient support can lead to back pain.  Adjustable beds are used quite often as a tool to reduce pain for comfortable sleep.  It just makes sense to pick a mattress that is better equipped to assist in the pursuit.
