A three quarter mattress, or what some may call an antique mattress, can have two different measurements. One three quarter mattress measures 48″ x 75″, and the other measuring 48″ x 72″. It is to note some sizes may be split because each model comes in different sizes, but a Three Quarter mattress is one piece. We can make both sizes. What Size of Mattress Fits a Three-Quarter Bed?
A ¾, or three-quarter mattress is what will fit a ¾ bed. This mattress is often referred to as an antique mattress. That’s because it fits antique beds which have the unique measurements of 48 inches wide and 75 inches long.
3/4 Mattress Dimensions is 48 x 75 Mattress
Some antique beds will have slightly different dimensions though. Mattresses did not always come in standard sizes. It wasn’t until the late 1800’s that the standard sizing which is used today was developed. After the standardization of mattress sizes and beds went into effect, manufacturers were fabricating the ¾ mattress. However, there was not a standardization on the sizing of it. The east coast and west coast ended up creating different versions of the mattress, with mis-matched dimensions. This created an inconsistency in the measurements of what is referred to as the three-quarter bed. So, sometimes the widths would differ between 48 inches and 49 inches. Sometimes the length of antique beds differs as well. Today, ¾ mattresses are made to measure 48 x 75 to fit ¾ beds. These mattresses are not only suitable for antique three-quarter beds, they can also be used in RVs and some mobile homes.
Odd Size 48 x 72 Three Quarter Mattress
The inconsistency between three quarter beds throughout history is still relevant today. While most of the time the term is used to describe a mattress measuring 48 inches by 75 inches, this is not always the case. Sometimes, even today, a three-quarter mattress will actually be shorter. The odd size three quarter mattress that measures 48” wide and 72” long is one example. Used in areas that are limited on space, such as in travel campers, the abbreviated length saves room. Though our three-quarter mattresses are 48”x75” by default, we have the ability to offer custom beds in any size. That means when beds require this unconventional size, it can be made to order. 3/4 Mattress vs Full Size Mattress
A full-size mattress is not the same as a three-quarter mattress. They both share the same length in present-day production, however, a full-size bed is 6 inches wider. This narrower width is what makes the three-quarter size good for small spaces. That’s why it works well in RVs and in trendy tiny homes.
Three Quarter Mattress 48 x 75 vs 48 x 72 Mattress
Assessing your own personal needs in terms of mattress size is essential before making a mattress purchase. The antique bed sizes can be used in numerous circumstances. Perhaps, you have lucked out and found a vintage bed frame and want to put it to good use. Maybe you need one for usage in a recreational vehicle. They can even be used inside the home to free up bedroom space or better fit the available area. For this reason, the three-quarter mattress is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Rather, this size offers options. The 48 x 75 mattress size is one variation of the three-quarter mattress that is available. It offers a more traditional mattress length with a narrower width. The benefit of a 48 x 75 mattress is that it offers the same general leg room as a Twin- or Full-size bed.
