What size mattress fits a trundle bed?

The size of mattress that fits under a trundle bed can be one of many.  The special design of a trundle bed means typically, there are two mattresses of different sizes used.  The lower bed is usually a Twin size with dimensions of 39” x 75”.  The bed that is house above it would then need to be slightly larger.  In many cases, this one will measure 41” x 77” so it is a little wider and a little longer.  Another common size combination that trundle beds use is a Full-size mattress paired with one that measures 55” x 81.25”.

Now, these are just a few examples of trundle bed mattress size possibilities.  Manufacturers of trundle beds can build these beds to fit traditional or custom sizes.  Some brands may even make them to specifically fit mattresses they make themselves.  This further expands the possible size combinations found on trundle beds.  Models made for adults versus young kids may also impact the size of mattress used on a trundle bed.  The trundle bed will move in and out underneath the upper bed frame.  For this reason, the lower mattress is usually smaller than the one on top.

Unique Length Trundle Mattress Size

Due to the varied trundle bed mattress size needs, replacing one may require ordering a custom mattress.  We offer mattress customization in soft, medium or firm. We can provide you with one made in any size necessary.  Whether you need one of the common sizes used in a trundle bed, or something wholly unique, we can make it happen.  These made to order mattresses can also be designed with a thickness that allows for proper fit.  Mattress height is a factor to be considered.  A trundle bed mattress has to fit inside the frame and also under the top bunk.

How thick should a trundle bed mattress be?

The thickness of a mattress is especially important for trundle beds.  Trundle mattresses are generally 6-8 inches thick.  Eight-inch trundle bed mattresses are likely the most popular.  If a mattress is too thick, it may not fit under the other bed when put away.  If the fit is tight, the mattress may be difficult to pull and may be damaged by the frame catching.  Thinner mattresses like those 6-8 inches, also tend to be better in terms of weight.  These mattresses take up less of the bed’s maximum weight capacity because they often weigh less than thicker mattresses.

Trundle Mattress vs Twin Size Mattress

How a trundle bed mattress and a Twin mattress differ really depends on the size of the frame.  Some trundle mattresses have the exact length and width of a Twin.  Others, may vary by a few inches.  A standard Twin may be as thick as 10 or 12 inches, whereas a trundle mattress is around eight or fewer inches.  Casters are used to roll the trundle bed mattress out for use so a skinnier mattress often fits best.  Size aside, trundle mattresses and Twin mattresses are alike in one way.  Both can be composed of quality memory foam and/or latex.

Advantages of the Trundle

There are several advantages to using a trundle bed and mattress.  The 2-in-1 design allows two sleep surfaces in a compact area.  This can be useful for guest rooms, studio apartments, and small bedrooms.  Trundle beds add a second bed for overnight guests and kids’ slumber parties.  There are multiple situations where this sleep setup comes in handy.  Using a good trundle bed mattress that fits properly is essential.  Fortunately, any size trundle mattress can be made, ensuring an appropriate fit for your bed.  These mattresses are constructed in America, made to offer support and comfort for years to come.
