TWIN HOSPITAL BED BUYER`S GUIDE

twin size hospital bed

What is a Twin Size Hospital Beds?

Sizing of twin hospital beds is inconsistent between brands and models. The reason is centered around the fact that hospital beds have users that face different challenges and have differing needs. The twin hospital bed can be used in conjunction with a second bed to sleep side by side with a partner. It can be used for a single individual that is tall or short. These bed types can also be set up in rooms that have minimal space. That might mean a shorter bed is preferred. Producers of twin hospital beds have been proactive in creating multiple size options to fulfill the needs of the most individuals. You might come across options for 38” x 74”, 38” x 80”, 38” x 84” or even other custom sizes.

  • Targeted Support
  • Vertical Adjustability
  • Timed Massage
  • High-Low Feature
  • Optional Side Rails

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY

Convenient raising and lowering of the full twin hospital bed is a key benefit of the Flex a bed Hi-Low.  The high-low feature enables a better range of reach for caregivers that must tend to the bed’s primary user.  It can also go a long way to easing the struggle of transferring from the bed.  Flex a bed has a twin-size hospital bed that comes in three length choices; 74 inches, 80 inches and 84 inches.  All three of these sizes are 38 inches in width.  Optional accessories for the Flex a bed also cater to those with the distinct need for head rails and body rails.

Transfer Master Supernal 3 Hi Low

Twin Sizes: 38″ x 80 ”

Highlights

  • Massage
  • Head Tilt
  • Hi Low Feature
  • Wall Hugger

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY

The Wall hugger aspect is a special feature on a Transfer Master Supernal Hi Low twin hospital bed.  This empowers the bed with the ability to maintain body orientation near the bedside table as the head is lifted.  Very few twin hospital beds have the power to do this.  It is a feature typically reserved for modern adjustable beds.  This can be especially helpful for those who must spend a significant amount of time in bed.  The Supernal Hi Low also has massage and locking casters.  Optional accessories can be added such as half rails at the head.

Transfer Master Supernal 5 Hospital Style Bed

Twin Sizes: 38″ x 80″

Highlights

  • Hi Low Feature
  • Trendelenburg Position
  • Reverse Trendenburg Position
  • Massage (Optional Upgrade)

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY

As a step-up from the TM Hi Low, the Transfer Master Supernal offers extra positioning.  Trendelenburg as well as reverse Trendelenburg are possible on this twin hospital bed.  There is a lot of research and controversy on the potential benefits of these positions.  Nonetheless, they are a possible option on this model.  These positions angle the complete body through a full body tilt.  One negative is that this model doesn’t automatically include massage, though it can be added for additional cost.  Half rails are also an elective add-on.  The Supernal 5 comes in only one twin size which equates to a classic Twin XL.

Transfer Master New Valiant Bed Base

Twin Sizes: 38″ x 80″, 38″ x 84″

Highlights

  • Hi Low Feature
  • Trendelenburg Position
  • Reverse Trendelenburg
  • Massage (Optional Upgrade)
  • Bariatric Bed Option
  • Egress Lighting (Optional Upgrade)

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY

In addition to having more custom twin sizes than lower-end Transfer Master models, the Valiant has a dissimilar base.  Whereas the Supernal 5 and the Supernal Hi Low have a thick foundation, the Valiant is considered to be low-profile.  That means the bed base is thinner.  This twin hospital bed is also much more customizable.  The bed comes standard with adjustable positioning, high-low, a wired hand control as well as special positions Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg.  Adding the deluxe five function package upgrade adds Egress lighting and single variable massage.  It also upgrades the controller to a touch and glow wireless remote.

Upgraded Version Transfer Master Valiant HD (Weight Capacity 600 lbs)

Just like the Valiant, the Transfer Master Valiant HD has the upgrade package available.  That means you can elevate your twin hospital bed experience with added massage, lighting and wireless control.  The difference between the two is that the Valiant HD is a bariatric bed.  The significance is that this bed is reinforced to support more weight, up to a 600-pound maximum capacity.  Bariatric twin hospital beds, like this one, are good for use by heavier individuals that may require a more durable frame.   It is also compatible with a low-profile Hoyer lift system and has several supplemental components that can be added.

Upgraded Version Transfer Master Valiant SHD (Weight Capacity 750 lbs)

All the same options are available on the Transfer Master Valiant SHD that are on other Valiant models.  This twin-size hospital bed is considered a super heavy-duty bed.  It is also a bariatric bed that is constructed to be durable and safely accommodating to heavy sleepers.  It is designed to bear up to 750 pounds at the maximum capacity.  Establish a custom sleep arrangement by adding one to fourteen of the optional accessories.  You can add hospital grade power cords and retainer bars or an appealing headboard-footboard combo.  These are just some of many ways you can make this bed your own.

The Ultimate Flex Assist Adjustable Bed

  • Recliner Position
  • Includes Medium Mattress

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY

Getting into and out of bed can be a struggle for many.  With the Kingship Flex Assist twin hospital bed, it is made easier thanks to a dual purpose.  First, the bed acts to provide head and foot articulation.  Second, the bed serves as a lift chair with lift up function.  This is most useful for those who may need extra help entering and exiting the bed.  It permits the full bed, compete with medium-firm mattress, to sit up like a chair.  Then, once inside the bed, you can move it back into a flattened position that is convenient for sleep.  It also has side rails.

Which mattress fits twin hospital bed?

A twin hospital bed that is 38” wide and 74” long will fit a Twin-size mattress that is 38” x 75”.  One that is 38” wide and 80 inches long will perfectly fit a Twin XL mattress.  A 38” x 84” twin hospital bed is considered to be a custom size and as such will require one of two options.  You can use a branded Transfer Master or Flex a Bed mattress that is made to fit or order a custom mattress.  We can make you a mattress to fit any bed.

What size is a twin hospital bed?

As you can see, a twin hospital bed can have measurements of different lengths and widths.  Many manufacturers make them at 38 inches wide offering different length choices.  Sometimes they are 74 inches long while other times they are 80 or 84 inches long.  Verify the dimensions with each model when making your determination.

Do any of the twin hospital beds come with a mattress?

The Kingship Flex Assist comes with a medium-firm mattress.  Other models listed have optional mattresses from the manufacturer.  See the drop-down menu on each product page.  It is important to know that you don’t have to use a mattress that is specially made for the bed.  Most memory foam and latex mattresses will work fine jointly with twin hospital beds as long as the dimensions are made to fit.  For non-traditional mattress sizes, we can custom make a mattress to fit as well.
