What is a merino wool blanket?

A merino wool blanket is a comforter made with merino wool.  Typically, these blankets have a cotton outside liner that is filled with the merino wool.  This wool is sourced from Merino sheep and is a natural and renewable fiber.  Merino wool blankets are often lightweight but are warmer than other blankets with similar weight.  They are also very soft.

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY

Sleep & Beyond Merino Wool Blanket

There are many reasons one might look towards replacing polyester or down blankets with one made from Merino wool.  Allergies and chemical sensitivities are often drivers.  The Sleep & Beyond Merino wool comforter is 100% hypoallergenic.  It is fashioned from Kyrgyzstan’s superfine wool and wrapped in certified organic sateen fabric.  That makes it soft, lightweight, and breathable yet warm.

Merino Wool Sheep

One characteristic that effects Merino sheep is the fact that their wool continuously grows.  If left alone, the thick coat would negatively impact the sheep.  It could cause overheating or it could become so heavy that the sheep would have difficulty walking.  It just so happens that the quality of their wool is good for textiles.  So, these sheep are shorn regularly.  The wool’s natural properties make it a good fit, especially for blankets.

Merino Wool

As far as wool goes, Merino wool is some of the softest in the world.  What makes it that way is how thin the strands of wool are in diameter.  Mostly, Merino wool falls around 22 microns in diameter.  The finest fibers are 15 microns or less.  This makes it soft, comfortable and less likely to feel itchy, an ideal combination for blankets.

Merino Wool vs Synthetic Wool

There are several strengths that Merino wool has compared to synthetic wool.  It has a natural propensity for wicking moisture.  It also stays dryer feeling than synthetic wool.  Merino wool is more breathable and odor resistant as well.  Synthetic wool is often highly flammable whereas Merino wool is flame-resistant.  Merino wool is a renewable resource that can be recycled and it is also biodegradable.  In contrast, synthetic wool can damage the environment during production and through shedding.

Washing Merino Wool Blankets

People wash Merino wool blankets in a variety of ways, none of which involve a washing machine or dryer.  In fact, manufacturers recommendations indicate you should never machine wash or dry.  Below are a few options for cleaning a Merino wool comforter.

  • Rather than washing the entire blanket, use a washable cover.
  • Employ the natural disinfecting power of the sun. Regularly air out and set the blanket in the sun.
  • Spot clean using mild detergent and a soft brush.
  • Utilize ecofriendly short cycle dry cleaning with minimum moisture.
