Organic Bedding
What is Organic Bedding:
Organic bedding is bedding that is free from chemical usage. It is constructed of materials that are acquired in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. Typically, organic bedding is hypoallergenic, making it a valid choice for those with sensitive skin or respiratory issues. There are regulations that a company must adhere to in order to designate an item as organic. Sometimes companies mislead customers into thinking a product is organic when it is not or only partially so. We go over some ways below to help you know which sleep products are in fact organic. The good news is that there are more options than ever.
Organic Bedding Manufacturing and Farming
The difference between organic bedding and inorganic bedding begins at the very start of the entire production process. The process looks different, depending on what the organic bedding is made up of. For example, for articles of organic bedding that originate from a plant-based resource, the land must accommodate organic crops. This means establishing a sustainable and chemical-free cultivation. Some organic bedding is made from the fleece of an animal. In this case, not only must the animal be fed an organic diet, this diet must start during gestation. Livestock used for organic bedding cannot be exposed to chemicals such as pesticides or hormones either. All of these precautions ensure that the consumer is not unwilling subjected to harmful toxins.
Basics of Organic Bedding
Third party certifications are used to authenticate organic bedding and make it easier for consumers to identify. The predominate certification to look for is called GOTS, otherwise known as Global Organic Textile Standard. This label can tell shoppers about the organic composition of the cover, insides of a cover and material within the cover. A company must follow a series of steps and products must undergo evaluation in order to merit a GOTS label. Without this label, there is very little to back up the claim that a product is actually organic bedding. Other third-party certifications to look for include WoolMark and Oeko-Tex.
Organic Bedding with WoolMark Wool
WoolMark is a certification that relates only to wool products. There are three levels of certification. Garments are tested for wool composition as well as durability and quality. To pass for quality, fabric must meet certain wash ability and dye-fastness criteria. Upon completion of all testing, one of the three certification levels, is assigned. “Pure New Wool” is the highest badge earned meaning the item is 100% new wool. “Wool Rich Blend” is more than 50% new wool but less than total. A textile must be a minimum of 30% new wool in order to meet the lowest standards which are represented with a “Wool Blend Performance” label.
Reason to Choose Organic Bedding
Many people benefit from organic bedding. The end user avoids chemicals that they may otherwise be exposed to as they sleep. Sleeping on organic bedding is also a good choice for people with sensitive skin or allergies. Your choice for organic bedding also helps protect the livelihood of organic farmers. Organic bedding manufacturing leaves a smaller ecological footprint compared to inorganic manufacturing. This results in less pollution to the air, ground and oceans.
- Protect the environment from unnecessary pollution.
- Support organic farmers who are doing the right thing.
- Limit your personal exposure to hazardous herbicides.
- Reduce your family’s exposure to abrasive chemicals.

- Sleep better knowing you are positively contributing to the health of our planet.
Organic Comforters:
To pinpoint which organic comfort is best, we consider the certifications as well as the comfort and quality. A myMerino organic comforter is the best that we found based on these characteristics. It has gone through several third-party procedures, featuring GOTS, WoolMark and USDA Organic certifications. This good quality organic comforter is free from harmful chemicals. It is made from Kyrgyz organic merino wool with a 400 thread count sateen organic cotton encasement. This allows for breathability that helps regulate temperature, making it comfortable too. One of the reasons we really like this one is that temperature regulation. In Texas, it can get really hot or really cold, so the breathability of the thread count makes an impact. With a higher thread count, there would be retained heat. Wool is 100% hypoallergenic so this one is perfect for those who suffer seasonal allergies or allergies to down, feather or polyester. Wool also acts as a flame retardant without adding any chemicals at all. Ultimately, we found the myMerino organic comforter to be the best organic comforter because it’s soft and has these benefits.

Organic Sheet Set
The foundation of all organic bedding starts with the sheets. We like the Sleep and Beyond organic sheet sets because they are 100% organic. This claim is backed by a GOTS certification, which means they have been tested and held to stringent standards. It’s good to know for sure that there is no off gassing of carcinogenic chemicals. Plus, the quality of these organic sheets is nice; soft and smooth, perfect for good sleep. Part of why we favor this company for organic bedding is that they are extra. To call a product organic, they don’t have to use reusable, biodegradable packaging, but they do. It’s this concern for the bigger picture that sets Sleep and Beyond apart. Each set comes with a flat sheet, a fitted sheet and two pillow cases.
