If latex will sleep hot depends on whether the latex is natural or synthetic. That depends on many factors. The temperature at which mattresses sleep is determined by a combination of several details, only one of which is the primary material makeup of the mattress. Even when generalizing latex mattresses, there are a couple of things to consider. The sleeping temperature will fluctuate based on whether it is a natural latex mattress or made of synthetic latex. For those who sleep hot and want a mattress that will help, natural latex may be beneficial.

Natural Latex

Latex is made from a tropical tree, and since latex is rubber, it does not sleep hot if it is natural latex. One consideration if the mattress feels hot with natural latex is to make sure the cover is cotton. Many times, if the mattress sleeps hot, it is because it does not have a cotton cover that allows it to breathe.

Synthetic Latex

Synthetic latex is a man-made material produced from petroleum-derived compounds. There are many different types, so it is important to understand the specific type before determining whether the synthetic latex will sleep hot. However, natural latex will sleep cooler than synthetic latex.

How Material Impacts Rather Hot or Cold

Natural latex has properties that allow for greater breathability. The cell structure of natural latex mattresses promotes more airflow compared to other types of mattresses. A completely 100% all-natural latex mattress will sleep cooler than one that is only partly made of natural latex. This is because when less breathable fabrics and materials are used inside a mattress, they can block airflow. Firmness can also affect temperature regulation. A softer mattress will envelop your body more and keep you warmer, while a firmer mattress will have the opposite effect, helping you sleep cooler.

Other Factors Impacting Temperature

The environment outside and inside are factors affecting the temperature of the mattress. The environment outside of your mattress is just as important.  Room temperature and body weight may contribute to overheating, as does the physical environment of your bed.  A latex mattress is wrapped in a mattress cover.  If the cover is not breathable, it really limits how cool and dry you can stay as you sleep.
