A Twin XL is 38 inches wide whereas each side of a split California King is 36 inches wide. Additionally, the lengths differ as well. The Twin XL is four inches shorter than a California King.  That means putting two Twin XLs next to each other does not make up a Split California King mattress in length or width.

First off, looking at the bed as a whole, the dimensions for both are the same. Either will create a total surface space that is 72” by 84” when set up. The principal difference between the two is that the split-top version is connected at the feet. The regular Split California King is not. A Split California King is completely separate.

This means the sides can be set to move simultaneously or you have option to move independently. Basically, the difference is you have the choice.
